Respiratory

According to the theory of acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, treating respiratory illnesses is extremely important because the pathogens causing them can spread to the internal organs and cause more harm.

The reason a patient succumbs to these illnesses may be two-fold: 1) an internal deficiency exists such as a weakened immune system or 2) an invasion of external elements has occurred. Acupuncture treatment can effectively help relieve the symptoms by strengthening a patient’s immune system and eliminating external pathogen elements.

How We Help With...

The American Journal of Epidemiology published a study that showed that acupuncture can significantly relieve allergic rhinitis symptoms. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine can treat seasonal or year-round allergies. By building the immune system, transforming phlegm, opening the sinuses, and regulating organ function, acupuncture and herbal medicine can be very helpful for congestion, shortness of breath, allergic asthma, watery eyes, stuffy nose, malaise and cough. Allergies developed through heredity are looked at as underlying deficiencies, and addressed accordingly through acupuncture, herbal medicine, and lifestyle changes.

Sinusitis occurs mainly in young and middle-aged adults, although children are also at risk. When the condition does present itself, it can be due to one of four main causes:

  1. Infection from a virus, bacteria or fungus
  2. Allergic rhinitis (swelling of the lining of the nose)
  3. Formation of nasal polyps (growths inside the sinus passages)
  4. Deviated septum (when the nasal septum, or thin wall between the nostrils, shifts to one side)

Acupuncture and Oriental medicine offers help for your symptoms of sinusitis—whether acute, chronic or frequently occurring. We will want to know the severity and duration of symptoms to determine what the best method of treatment is.

The flu vaccine is not the only method available to treat the symptoms of the flu. Since the 17th century, Oriental Medicine has been treating flu-like symptoms with success.

Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can not only help prevent the flu, but can also help treat the illness once symptoms have begun to appear. Traditionally, patients are seen four times a year, at the change of seasons, to increase immunity to the ever changing environment. Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine helps to prevent the flu by simply strengthening the body’s immune system. Studies have shown that certain blood counts and immune enhancing chemicals stay elevated for at least 3 days following an acupuncture treatment.

If symptoms are due being to arise, then immediate treatment is imperative. The key to effective treatment is early intervention. The sooner treatment is received for flu-like symptoms the faster and more effective treatment is. If you have already come down with a cold or the flu, acupuncture treatments can help relieve symptoms you are currently experiencing including chills, fever, body aches, runny nose, congestion, sore throat and cough. Alongside bringing immediate relief, treatments will also reduce the incidence of an upper respiratory tract infection and shorten the length of the illness.

A chronic cough is more than just a nuisance and may cause serious disruptions to a person’s health. The most common causes of chronic cough are smoking, post nasal drip, asthma and acid reflux. Other culprits include chronic bronchitis, the flu, pneumonia, whooping cough and certain blood pressure medications.

When treating a chronic cough, it is important to address the underlying cause, or root cause, as it is known according to the philosophy of acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Once the root cause is cleared up, the chronic cough will clear up. We help a patient eliminate risk factors that can contribute to a chronic cough and use proper acupoints to help control the cough.
